There are some remarkably profound questions in the Bible. These questions are provocative and the correct answers are essential to the Christian faith. The most significant question in the Bible was asked by Jesus of his disciples:

A recent study sponsored by Ligonier Ministries and conducted by Lifeway Research sought to discern what Americans believe about God. It revealed that American Christians are confused about core Christian doctrine. It appears that 71% of American Evangelicals agree with the statement “Jesus is the first and greatest creature created by God.” The answers to other questions seem to demonstrate that most American Christians hold to some form of beliefs that do not reflect orthodox Nicene Theology. That many pastors don’t know what “Nicene Theology” is may demonstrate the source of American theological illiteracy. But the real question is “Does it matter?”

There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light (John 1:6-8).
We don’t often think of John the Baptist when thinking of Christmas. As far as I know, there are no Christmas hymns dedicated to him, he does not appear in the manger scene, and he does not appear in any Christmas play that I’ve seen. But in the observance of Advent, the person and message of John the Baptist is significant in our preparation for the celebration of Christmas.
