Most of us have heard Bishop Michael Curry’s powerful message at the wedding of Harry and Megan. It was a powerful gospel sermon preached with the fire of Pentecost. I have noticed that my social media feed has been populated with strong affirmations of his message from friends on the left and right. All acknowledged the power of his message. But there is more to be considered.
I have followed Bishop Curry’s ministry for several years. As I listened to his words I was aware that he is “gay-friendly” bishop. Although I remain convinced that he is profoundly wrong on that issue, I am even more convinced that he is eternally right about the power of love. (For a biblical understanding of sexuality see Sam Allberry’s address.)
As he preached I watched the faces of his audience. It was apparent they were unprepared for this kind of sermon. As a Pentecostal, I was familiar with his enthusiastic delivery. I think, however, that his message hit them squarely in the face. The power of the gospel confounds.
Bishop Curry is known for his generous and forgiving spirit. He once addressed a gathering of African Episcopal bishops to encourage them to adopt his gay friendly theology. To their credit, the African bishops voted overwhelmingly to reject homosexual marriage. Curry’s response demonstrated great humility. He refused to be critical of their decision and acknowledged that the issue was difficult.
When we talk about the power of love, we too often confuse the incorruptible love of God, which is conditioned by God’s redemptive purpose, with the corruptible love of humanity which is subjected to our self-interests. Curry is right – love flows from the heart of God and reshapes humanity.
Bishop Curry’s message of love will be misappropriated by the right and left. The right will see in his message veiled political references that justify leftist political ideologies. The left will see his message as an indictment of the intolerant and self-righteous right. Both will be angry which demonstrates that neither heard his message.
I found his message on the fire of love to be faithful to the Spirit of Pentecost. Paul wrote, “. . . God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5 ESV). It is my hope-filled prayer that Christians of all tribes will be convicted by Bishop Curry’s words and repent. I am reminded of Jesus’ warning to the church at Ephesus: “I have this against you, that you have left your first love” (Revelation 2:4). God help us!
